Our last Diocesan Inspection took place in May 2019- Here are just a few of the things that our Inspectors had to say (for the full report please click:
‘The Catholic Life of the school is outstanding because the Catholic mission and ethos are given the highest priority and shared by senior leaders, staff and governors alike. The pupils of St Cuthbert’s are happy and well-mannered; they have a deep sense of belonging to the school family of St Cuthbert’s. This sense of family is nurtured from their earliest days in school. One heartfelt response by a pupil summed this up saying, ‘We may be different ages, different classes, different genders or different religions – but we are part of one big family’.
The school mission statement – ‘Educate; Create; Witness: Christ at the Centre’ permeates all elements of the school. It is understood and lived out by all and sits at the heart of St Cuthbert’s.’
Here is just a snippet of some of the amazing things that go on at St. Cuthbert’s each and every day. We provide our children with a wide, rich set of experiences that develop their talents and interests. Our children are confident and resilient and enjoy each and every learning opportunity both inside and outside of school, giving them an excellent foundation to become lifelong learners who embrace and thrive on new and exciting challenges. We are so proud of each and every one of them. Take a look and we think you’ll agree.

Other Faiths Fortnight: Hinduism
As part of our ‘Other Faiths Fortnight’ We welcomed members of Sunderland’s Hindu Faith Community into school who taught us about some of their key beliefs. We learned about the ideas of living well, non-violence and karma- where what you send out comes back to you- so if you believe you do good things you will receive good things in return. We also learnt how Hindu’s believe that you need a healthy body, spirit and mind. A big thank you to our visitors for giving their time to teach us about their faith
Other Faiths Fortnight: Sikhism
Members of the Sikh community also came to visit school and then we went to visit the Gurdwara in Newcastle. We learned that Sikhs show devotion and reverence of God at all times and practice the ideals of honesty, compassion, humility and generosity.
Heritage Day:
We thoroughly enjoyed Heritage Day which celebrated all of the different heritages that make up our school family. These include English, Polish, Italian, Venezuelan, Indian, Filipino, Middle-East Dubai, Nigerian, Ghanaian, Pakistani, Zambian, American, Czech Republic, Australian & Irish. What a wonderful diverse family from all over the world.
Adventure Sunderland:
Year 6 enjoyed a fantastic day at Adventure Sunderland- facing their fears and enjoying a variety of watersports #teamyear6
Good Attendance Matters:
Leanne, our attendance officer is a regular visitor to school and helps us to understand why coming to school every day is so important.
Our Friends at High Grindon House:
We love being part of our community and one of the things we like to do is visit some of our older and wiser friends at High Grindon House, whether that be to sing carols at Christmas or to read to them or to take part in a football history day- young and old coming together to learn from one another.
Disconnect to Reconnect:
The day we stepped away from relying on technology and screens and enjoyed playing board games, crafting, completing jigsaws and getting outside into the fresh air and using our imaginations (we also combined it with ‘Mad Bad Hair Day’ to raise funds for our Heritage Day)- a great time was had by all and we all went home to encourage our parents and carers to do the same.
Sport at St. Cuthbert’s:
PE and Sport are very important parts of our curriculum here at St. Cuthbert’s- whether that be taking part in our timetabled PE lessons or representing our school in competitions, we love to take part. Here are just a few of our most recent adventures- today St. Cuthbert’s- tomorrow the Olympic Squad!
Quad Athletics at Monkton Stadium & St. Anthony’s:
Tennis Stars of the Future:
Visiting one of our Feeder Secondary Schools- St. Anthony’s for Teddy Bear Olympics:
Raising Money for Charity:
We raise money for a number of charities including Cafod, Children in Need, Red Sky Foundation, Our Local Food bank, and many more. One of our favourite charities to support is the ‘Bradley Lowery Foundation’ which raises money to support research into childhood cancers.
Meeting a legend- Jimmy Montgomery
We very much enjoyed a visit from 1973 FA Cup legend Jimmy Montgomery, he answered lots of questions that we had about the FA Cup, told us about his favourite players that he has played both with and against and showed us his winners medal. He even joined in a sing along with us. It was a lovely experience and we all thoroughly enjoyed his visit.
Bus Induction- Go North East
Every year we work with Sunderland Council and Go North East to introduce our ‘budding Year 7s’ to sensible and safe bus travel. This is a great initiative and really helps to calm those nerves for moving onto secondary school (and that’s just the Mams!!)
RNLI
As a coastal town, it is very important that we learn all about staying safe in and around water. Each year the wonderful volunteers from the RNLI come out and talk to us about water safety and what to do if we get into trouble in the water (We should float like a starfish)
Earth Day
Earth Day reminds us to honour and celebrate our remarkable planet. It is a day to remember how important it is to look after our world. Small changes can make a big difference. Here we are doing a school clean up of all the rubbish that blows over our fence.
You’ve Got A Friend In Me… Our Buddy’s
We all know that our school is one big family. We know how important it is to look after each other and if you visit us you will often see the older children supporting our younger ones. Guiding them and looking out for them. Here they are helping them with their reading.
Careers:
It is wonderful to watch the journey of our children as they grow and develop and exciting to think what they might go out into the world to become. We encourage each and every child to reach their full potential and to have great ambition for themselves. We celebrate careers day to encourage children to think about what they might like to be when they grow up.
